A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web, often starting with an autotroph, also called a producer, and typically ending at an apex predator, detritivore, or decomposer. It is not the same as a food web. A food chain depicts relations between species based on what they consume for energy in trophic levels, and they are most commonly quantified in length-the number of links between a trophic consumer and the base of the chain.

खाद्य शृंखला या आहार शृंखला स्वपोषित जीवों से आरम्भ होने वाले और एक शीर्ष परभक्षियों पर समाप्त होने वाले आहार जाल में कड़ियों का एक रैखिक संजाल है। भूकृमि या काष्ठोत्कुण, या अपघटक प्रजातियाँ । खाद्य शृंखला का प्रत्येक चरण अथवा कड़ी एक पोषी स्तर बनाते हैं। स्वपोषी अथवा उत्पादक प्रथम पोषी स्तर हैं तथा सौर ऊर्जा का स्थिरीकरण करके उसे परपोषियों अथवा उपभोक्ताओं के लिए उपलब्ध कराते हैं। शाकाहारी अथवा प्राथमिक उपभोक्ता द्वितीय पोषी स्तर; लघु मांसाहारी अथवा द्वितीय उपभोक्ता तृतीय पोषी स्तर; तथा शीर्ष मांसाहारी अथवा तृतीय उपभोक्ता चतुर्थ पोषी स्तर निर्मित करते हैं।
